Social safety nets are necessary so at least the poor have a stake in the capitalist system, if we let them get trampled underfoot then it is called facism, not a free market.

Many of these bankers never deserved what they eventually earned. They just gamed the system, rather than working with in it, in order to amass their fabulous wealth. To them, the law was a mere nuisance, not something to be heeded and obeyed.

And now you want people working as apple-pickers. You have truly no respect for human life, just as the majority of the ultra-ultra-ultra rich do not. People who have worked hard in order to improve their state, under capitalism, should be rewarded with a better job and a better life. Plus, even if they are going to pick apples, they deserve basic human benefits so they can improve their life at some point.

Re: Occupy Wall Street demonstrators write to bankers - Oct. 28, 2011

If you try to block the streets without specific permission, it is illegal. Is $18.75 a hour a bad wage, or is "that kind of work" below a college graduate? Or maybe it's beneath the current generation to do manual labor? Just wondering.

Seems like the more we hear from OWS the more it becomes about "getting" the rich people and less about equity issues, the few we hear talking about corporate influence in government sound a LOT like the tea party. Those households consisted of retired people living on social security, unemployed people, and people with incomes low enough so that their exemptions and deductions exceeded their incomes, leaving them with no FEDERAL INCOME tax liability. The working poor DID PAY -- PAYROLL TAXES, STATE and LOCAL INCOME TAXES, SALES TAXES, etc.

In summary, while the poorest among us might pay no federal income tax, the taxes they do pay consume a larger percent of their income than the taxes paid by a large proportion of the wealthy -- Warren Buffett's argument for the wealthy to pay more taxes. Incidentally, a recent survey reported by the Wall Street Journal (Oct. 21, 2011) found that 68% of millionaires favor raising taxes on millionaires.

Re: Occupy Wall Street demonstrators write to bankers - Oct. 28, 2011

Just what are the claiming Wells Fargo did wrong? That is backwards. If stock options are the quickest way to amass wealth, why doesn't EVERY publicly traded company give EVERY employee stock? Because executives feel THEY do all the heavy lifting, so they get the lions share of the reward. If all non-executive employee's walked off the job at any publicly traded corporation, the corporation would crumble. They can not outsource EVERYTHING. They can not retrain EVERYONE overnight and it would prove that ALL jobs within an organization are critical to the success, not just the c-suite. Instead of occupy Wall Street, folks should organize folks to walk off the job and see how that spooks executives. It would send a very strong message and wake some folks up.

Re: Occupy Wall Street demonstrators write to bankers - Oct. 28, 2011

Assuming that your 50% is correct, how many of them are retirees?
