Only one of the posters (guster00), including the author of the article, seems to understand the Kindle purpose. The Kindle, in the instance of Amazon as a seller of ebooks, digital music, and digital video, is a vessel and conduit. As a product, it serves no other purpose. The Kindle (all of the various models) are the equivalent of a durable grocery sack sold at a local supper market; it's something in which other products, purchased at the same venue, can be carried. Actually it's more like a durable sack that could morph into a table, oven, refrigerator, and plates with eating utensils.

Amazon's profits are based on the content consumed by purchasers on the Kindle; not on the Kindle. After all, supermarkets don't report sales figures for their durable grocery sacks. In this model the Kindle product line are promotional tools or expenditures rather than profitable goods.

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

Starting a tablet fund. It's a projection based on future earnings.
In Amazon's case Mr Pesos has long been hyping the company. So far he has sustained growth and some profit.
Selling shoes, books and other misc. rubbish is getting Mr Pesos some traction, but he needs to build up major momentum to achieve 320 times. Hence the expansion into Pads. Unfortunately his products fall way short of the mark, so he won't release numbers.
Wait for his next trick www.amazon_porn.xxx - now that's a money earner! :-)

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

Amazon uses the Kindle as another delivery mechanism. I like that analysts are betting Amazon's future on whether or not they sell a lot of Kindles. Their distribution system, tax fights with states, or cloud services should have a much bigger impact. A company doesn't report every bit of news because of both competitive intelligence, and how it can be misused by analysts

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

The reason a company - any company - refuses to disclose sales numbers is because those numbers are disappointing. I mean, if the sales were good wouldn't you want the world to know? Also, Kindles are completely irrelevant. Except for the price, there is nothing you get with a Kindle Fire that you don't get with an iPad and much, much more.

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

Can someone please explain to me how Amazon can trade for 320 times their estimated earnings for this year? They are owners of the company and should be entitled to the sales numbers of the company's hottest product. I dnt think the kindle is necessary essential to amazon's success but i certainly dont think that stockholders are being treated as partners

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

On or in the toilet? I then downloaded the Kindle app for my iPad, my DroidX phone, and my laptop. Whatever piece of equipment I need that day, I have the book with me and I can read it. The Kindle is more than just the device for me, it is a quick way to get books and have them available where and when I need them. For school I rented a textbook from Amazon. Using Kindle on my PC I was able to look things up so quickly. And when the semester was over, the book was gone. Perfect. I didn't want to own it. And the free books...so many fundamental pieces of western culture that I never got to in the past. I don't own the stock. I use the product. And it's more than the reader device. The purchase process is seamless to the point of magic. And my Kindle fits many of my pockets. It does so much more than what was promised, and it does it very well. Their price point makes them perfect gifts for people who love to read. And then you can give kindle books to them as gifts. It's wonderful. And it works so well.

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

Good for consumers, not so good for Apple's profit machine. This should force Apple to sell ipad mini in line with kindle price point.
Nexus 7 with android is probably Fire's real competitor.

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

I've got an Ipad 3 and a Kindle Fire. Kindle lives on the toilet, makes a perfect bathroom reader :) The Ipad I won, gave it to the g/f. Its nice, but I couldn't imagine spending $500 on it. My I5 laptop only cost $400 and does soo much more.

Re: Amazon unveils Kindle Fire HD, but sales will remain a mystery

Blah, blah, blah.
